Review:-
One Wish Away is about a girl - Lyra - who's very smart, at the top of her class, and has a wonderful best friend called Darren. But she still has problems: her mom left her and her father when she was very young, her dad isn't around because he's obsessed with his top secret job, and she isn't well liked at school.
But when she discovers that a star is missing, she vows to get at the bottom of it. After a series of hastily made plans and a few mishaps, Lyra finally learns about her fathers project and works with him as an intern.
Lyra is easy to relate to, because she feels alone and essentially has no one but Darren to confide in, and while she's smart, she needs to brush up on her "people skills". Even though it's clear that her father neglects her and focusing more on his work, she still loves and cares for him deeply and even risks breaking the law for him. When Lyra stars working at SEAD, she is naturally ecstatic because she's been waiting for this moment forever, but when she notices things going wrong she sacrifices everything- including her dream job and her life - to make things right.
Darren is Lyra's best friend and romantic interest, he's very sweet and charming and is always there for Lyra, even though he and his family aren't doing well financially. He helps Lyra throughout the book as he's the only one that Lyra confides in about her job. His relationship with Lyra is very well done, they've known each other since they were very young and he's always concerned about her having no one from her family care for her, even though he always does. He never pushed Lyra into something she doesn't want and he tries to be subtle about he's feeling for her so he doesn't freak her out. I love him.
The plot is something very different from anything else I've read, it has science fiction, mystery, action and drama. The science fiction bit might be confusing, there aren't a lot of points to understand, but the few things that are explained are very complex. This book raises a lot of moral questions, some easy and some are very hard to answer.
This is a very interesting and fast read which I recommend especially to people who like fiction with alternate realities.
About the Author
Eventually the day came when the voices in Kelley Lynn’s head were more insistent then her engineering professor’s. So instead of turning to her Thermodynamics book, Kelley brought up a blank page on her computer screen and wrote. Somewhere along the way she became a Young Adult author.Kelley was born and raised a Midwestern girl. She’s not afraid to sweat and fills her free time with softball, soccer and volleyball. (Though you probably don’t want her on your volleyball team.) She occasionally makes guest appearances as a female vocalist for area bands. Music plays a large role in her writing process as well as the characters and plot lines within her stories.
